Latex Bald Cap

Latex Bald Cap

Bald is beautiful, and you can get there without shaving your head! Bald caps are an important character creation tool for makeup artists, cosplayers, YouTubers, and many others. Traditionally, latex bald caps cover hair to create the illusion of age. The cap can either be used "as is" for a completely bald look or with added hair around the ears and back for a semi-bald character.

But don't let your imagination stop there! Create fantastic sea creatures, otherworldly aliens, and an infinite number of other imaginative characters. Use glitter, cosmetic powdered metal, or Luster™ powders for stunning avant-garde makeup. It's amazing what you can do without hair in the way. No matter your style, Graftobian's Latex Bald Caps have you covered.

If you have purchased the bald cap separately, ensure you have the necessary supplies listed on the instruction sheet under “Complete Kit Contains.” Some additional suggested items may be useful for certain applications.

Household Tools Required & Optional:

  • Required: Sharp pair of scissors
  • Optional: Steam iron & ironing board (for hair application), hair dryer

Before You Start:

  • Apply your makeup in a clean, well-lit area.
  • Arrange all materials neatly in front of you.
  • If doing the makeup yourself, use a well-lit mirror.
  • Wear old clothes, as makeup application can get messy.
  • Always apply makeup to clean skin. Wash your hands and face before you begin.
  • Read through all instructions thoroughly before starting.

Tips for Best Fit & Application:

  • Short hair works best – Comb your hair flat away from the forehead. Use a little styling gel if needed. Sideburns should be short.
  • For long hair – Pull it back into a low ponytail that exits from the bottom of the cap. It can be hidden or tucked into your costume or shirt.
  • Position the untrimmed cap evenly on the head – If the thin edge lies cleanly across the forehead, trimming may not be necessary. Otherwise, mark the cap lightly with a makeup pencil and trim carefully.
  • Removing wrinkles – If the bald cap has creasing due to packaging, use a hair dryer to soften the cap and relax the crease.

Attaching the Bald Cap:

  1. Slowly trim the front edge of the cap to follow a natural forehead wrinkle.
  2. Mark a line from the top of the ear downward toward the earlobe and carefully cut.
  3. Trim around the ears and, if necessary, at the sides and back of the neck. Ensure enough cap material is left to attach securely to the skin.
  4. Roll the front edge of the cap upward. Apply Spirit Gum to the skin where the cap edge will attach (approximately ½ – ¾ inch strip).
  5. When the gum is tacky, carefully roll the cap edge back down and press with a damp, lint-free towel. Allow adhesive to dry completely. Seal any loose edges with additional Spirit Gum.

For plastic caps only, the edge can be carefully melted into the skin by lightly brushing acetone over the edge until it dissolves. This must be done very slowly, applying a little at a time.

Finishing & Coloring:

  • Using a sponge, stipple two to three layers of Liquid Latex over all the edges to minimize the seam line.
  • Allow each layer to dry thoroughly.
  • For a textured surface, use a Red Rubber Sponge.
  • For a smoother surface, use a White Sponge Wedge.
  • For plastic caps only, apply three to four layers of Liquid Latex over the entire cap and force-dry with a hair dryer on a low setting.

Final Touches:

  • Powder all freshly dried latex with Pro Setting Powder to prevent sticking. Brush away excess powder with a soft brush.
  • For best results, use Rubber Mask Grease on the bald cap. This product is formulated for compatibility with latex caps and prosthetics, preventing drying during application.
  • Apply Rubber Mask Grease using a White Sponge Wedge in a stippling motion over the entire bald cap and surrounding skin.
  • Use character colors or blend foundation shades to match the skin tone.
  • Set everything with Pro Setting Powder in Translucent for long-lasting wear.

Important Notes:

  • If you have allergies to any of the listed ingredients, do not use those components. Instead, select alternative products that provide a similar effect.
  • Application takes approximately 1 hour, with additional time needed if applying hair or intricate effects.
  • For best results, use a new latex bald cap for each application. Due to stretching, reusing bald caps is not recommended.
  • To color the bald cap, use Rubber Mask Grease (RMG) for a seamless blend.
